We are ready for your submissions!

The purpose of the Yolanda López Moya Young Writers’ Award is to inspire children to commit their thoughts and ideas to paper and promote reading and writing for students of our school.

The award is open to all young people aged 12 to 18, who study at Margarita Salas School. Entries will be accepted from Monday, 15th March, 2020 until Friday, 7th April, 2021.

The Award comprises three categories with up to three young authors shortlisted in each category. Each shortlisted entry will receive a Certificate of Achievement and a gift voucher worth €10 to be spent either at a local stationer’s or at our canteen. The winner of each category will receive a school voucher for English textbooks in the year 2021-2022. Moreover, the winning entry from each category will be published in school’s website. Should a winner be a student in his last year at school (4º ESO/2º Bachillerato), (s)he would be awarded a set of readers’ books.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of five to eight teachers, who teach a wide range of subjects and levels. The shortlist will be announced on Friday, 23rd April 2021 (World Book Day). The winners will be announced shortly after that date.

AWARD CATEGORIES

This Award has three categories:

1. The 1º-2º ESO/1º PMAR’s Picture Book category

·         A short, structured story between 50 and 70 words.

·         Illustrations required.

2. The 3º-4º ESO/2º PMAR/FPB’s Short Story category

·         A work of short fiction between 80 and 120 words.

·         Story only, no illustrations required.

3. The Bachillerato/Grado Medio’s Short Story category

·         A work of short fiction between 130 and 200 words.

·         Story only, no illustrations required.

ELIGIBILITY OF THE WRITER

The writer must be:

·         Aged between 12 and 18 years of age in the year 2020.

·         Enrolled in ESO/PMAR/FPB/CFGM/Bachillerato at Margarita Salas School.

 

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

 

·         Works entered must have contents suitable for readers between 12 and 18 years of age.

·         Children can only enter one story and category.

·         Joint entries are not accepted.

·         All stories must be original, i.e. the work of a student.

·         Assistance with seeding of ideas, proofing or layout cannot be provided by a mentor.

·         The work must not have been published previously.

·         The work must be in English.

·         The work may be hand written.

·         The work must be written on A4 single-sided paper.

·         Entries not complying with these rules will be disqualified.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

 

Judges will assess the quality of entries based on:

 

·         creativity

·         structure

·         cohesiveness

·         story line and plot

·         style and language

·         characters’ development

·         the age of the contestants

 

SUBMISSIONS

 

For individuals who wish to enter.

 

1.    Send your story online to the link your teacher will give you - via Educamos -showing no names on it. Just your nickname.

2.    Write your name and class on a piece of paper and place it into a small envelope with your nickname on it. Close the envelope and give it to your teacher.
